Empowering students with learning differences

The Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund has supported Edison High School in Portland, Oregon for more than 20 years. In 2019, the Fund awarded a $1M grant to Edison’s new state-of-the-art facility to increase access to and expand the reach of excellence in educating students with learning differences. Founded in 1973, the unique high school empowers its focused demographic of students to experience academic success and personal growth while preparing them for a productive future. The faculty at Edison, more than 90% of whom hold a Masters’ degree, is able to use creative approaches to teaching, providing every student with individual support and accommodations they need. 

This new building will enable the school to increase enrollment and house the innovative POST Edison program and the new Edison Teaching and Learning Center. As one of the first contributors to this project, the MCM Fund has inspired others to give, helping bring the school closer to raising all the funds needed to break ground on the new facility.

The Impact 

The grant is helping Edison High School accomplish several goals by enabling them to: 

• Double the enrollment of students with learning differences in grades 9 – 12
• Grow POST Edison, a program supporting alumni as they transition to life after high school
• Increase services offered by the Edison Teaching and Learning Center to share best practices in teaching students with learning differences 
• Unite two campuses, bringing the Edison community together under one roof
• Upgrade classrooms to include cutting-edge technology, improved science labs, and art and drama facilities 
• Share Edison’s model of educating students with learning differences as an industry leader.
